The Plain Truth About Men

Vitruvian Man, 1492, Leonardo DaVinci’s sketch of a naked man.God honours those who walk in His Spirit and live according to His Word. His blessing also rests upon those who are truthful and real about themselves and the world in which we live.

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32 (NKJV)

With that in mind, let us examine a sensitive, certainly controversial subject.

Every day we are surrounded by sexually stimulating and even erotic images. We see partially clad women all the time. And partially clad or not, we notice. We notice, and we enjoy (even if we feel guilty about doing so.) A pretty lady walks by and we simply take pleasure in the view of God’s handiwork. Or we are at a checkout counter and the attractive young women waiting on us leans forward and we catch a glimpse of frilly bra, or a hint of nipple. And a part of us is delighted.

But many good, godly Christian men are not delighted. They feel tormented and wonder, "Why did God make me this way?"

Lusting?

We all know what Jesus said.

You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. " Matthew 5: 27 – 28 NKJV

But what did Jesus mean? Was He advocating an unrealistic and ideal standard to which no man alive can attain? Was He saying our basic humanity is inherently evil? That every time we notice an attractive female and feel the spark of our own sexuality we are sinning? That sounds cruel! There has to be a better understanding than that.

Jesus used the word lust. The question is, are you lusting when you notice, or catch the occasional peek? Is it lusting to feel sexually stimulated by a picture in a book or an image on TV? Are we to be condemned for something that is automatic, and involuntary to all males? If all of this is lusting, then none of us are good Christians, and heaven will certainly not be our ultimate home.

Male Sexuality is GOOD!

Ithink we have been fed so much religious nonsense about the nature of our humanity, and especially our sexuality, that we are all tied up in knots. It is almost like the Christian Church has waged war on male sexuality. In Genesis 1:27 it says,

"So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." Then verse 31 says, "Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good."

That includes men. The way God made men - including our sexuality, our genitals, and they way we are wired - is good. In fact, it is very good. Do you understand that? God made us the way we are, and it is a good thing.

If we believe otherwise, we may as well insist that our women be covered from head to toe, and let neither ankle nor elbow show (never mind cleavage, translucent tops, and skin tight crevice hugging jeans.) And nakedness itself would surely drive us insane! Bottom line (and haven’t we all seen some wonderful "bottom lines! "), to notice, and even to feel sexual stimulation

is not,

is not,

again is not,

Lust!

Well, then, what is lust? Lust involves more than just strong desire. It also means coveting the object of our desire. And without the coveting even strong desire falls short of actual lust.

If the only reason to say "no" is that an action is wrong, would you? Lust happens when, if given the chance, if there were no consequences, if no one would know, if we could get away with it, we would commit sexual sin with that person who we find attractive and sexually stimulating. If, in our heart and mind, we find ourselves in that place, we are in lust. Lust happens by intent, not accident. But the stimulation, the almost automatic stirring with us, the arousal and our experience of it - is not lust!

So many men are threatened by their own sexuality and live in a state of constant tension, and non-stop siege. There has to be a better way. And there is. God wants us to accept and embrace the reality of our God given nature, and say along with Him, "it is good." The way we are wired is ordained of the Almighty, not for our continual torment, but that we might feel fully alive, and fully enjoy the beauty of His creation in one of its most delightful forms, the figure of a woman. Enjoy!

God bless you.
