Why Masturbation?

Vitruvian Man, 1492, Leonardo DaVinci’s sketch of a naked man.Why have I felt led to think, research, pray, and write about Masturbation (of all things)?

What about it so fascinates me (well, other than the fact that it is fun and feels so good)?

What is it about my personal masturbation practice that feels not just pleasurable, but empowering and liberating?

These are important questions because understanding why we do something is often just as important to our personal and spiritual growth as is the doing of the thing. And there are some very important reasons why it is imperative for Christians to feel free to pleasure themselves to orgasm.

The very core of those reasons can be found in the reasons some writers give for condemning the near universal practice of private penile pleasures. As I have studied their writings over the past few years, I find that the reasons given are not just inadequate and based on flawed reasoning; they are downright contradictory to what the Bible actually says. In fact, upon closer examination I came to the conclusion that the problem is deeper than a list of arguments against solo sex. The real problem is in the way of thinking behind their faulty reasoning. A way of thinking based upon presumptions about God, the Christian life, and what it means to be a redeemed human being.

Fatally Flawed Thinking

Moreover, the presumptions and ways of thinking behind the condemnation of solo sex are the exact same as those behind most of what is wrong with many aspects of modern Christendom. These anti-masturbation arguments are indicative of a way of thinking that is not only fatally flawed, but which hinders Christianity from being all that God intended. They are at the very root of what needs to change in the teaching of the church and in the belief and behaviour of Christians everywhere. And they have affected not just our most intimate private moments but also how much of “Christianity” is structured and lived.

Struggling for Freedom

The Lord Himself has placed within our spirit a hunger, even a longing for freedom. Each one of us instinctively struggles against ungodly restrictions.

Sadly, in their struggle some have embraced not just the practice of masturbation but even illegitimate expressions of sexuality as a way of freeing themselves from what they perceive as the stupefying strictures of “Christianity.” They fail to realize that that while the Word of God does forbid any and all expressions of sexual immorality, there is nothing in the Scriptures to prohibit solo sex in any way. In fact, just the opposite is true. Had they understood this they would not have abandoned their faith. In fact, they could have embraced a ruggedly authentic and thoroughly Biblical Christianity and used their personal practice of solo sex to celebrate and affirm that decision.

Victorious Bible-believing Spirit-filled Christians can feel totally, completely, and absolutely free to enjoy the practice and pleasure of masturbation, and they will when they more fully understand the heart of their heavenly Father and the principles of the Word of God. In fact, embracing the simple practice and legitimate pleasures of Solo Sex could have long reaching positive effects. Masturbation is a wonderful place to begin a walk into greater freedom in God, clearer understanding of His character, more full cooperation with His desire for humankind, and greater enjoyment of the life of liberty for which we are destined.

So, what are some of the things we must break through in order to live a Godly life of freedom? What are the underlying things that shape improper thinking about the Word of God?

Shame

The first one is shame.

“Only the sexually selfish or those with lust problems or poor self control touch themselves sexually.”

Unhealthy religious systems are usually based on shame. Shaming people is one of the best ways to control them, to get them to do your bidding. It is not a healthy or a happy motivation.

Improper Approach to Scripture

The second thing is imposing upon the Word of God concepts that are not there.

“The Bible says it is a sin to masturbate.”

Religious leaders sometimes get an idea and then search the Bible for verses to support their suppositions. This is going at things the wrong way around. Instead we must start with Scripture and let it speak to us about what is right and wrong.

Wrong Concept of God

When you are serving the God of Endless Misery (contrasted with the God of Boundless Mercy) it is no wonder Solo Sex is forbidden. Those with this idea of the character of God have no knowledge of Him as our loving Heavenly Father who wants only good things for His children.

Demand for Conformity and Uniformity, Destruction of Individuality

Some who condemn masturbation have a mindset that says all Christians should think, talk, look and act alike. If they could have their way we would all be Stepford Christians; conforming mindlessly.

And it all begins with the thinking. Not what you are thinking, but how. Embracing and engaging robotic group-think. It doesn’t matter what you do or how you believe as long as it does not contradict what we think of as “the norm.”

Well, whether you believe it or not God came to save my soul, not take away my mind.

It reminds me of the old song by Malvina Reynolds. I like it so much I am going to share all four verses.

Little Boxes

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little Boxes. Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
Little boxes, little boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same

And the people in the houses
All go to the university,
And they all get put in boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
And there's doctors and there's lawyers
And business executives,
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf-course,
And drink their Martini dry,
And they all have pretty children,
And the children go to school.
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university,
And they all get put in boxes
And they all come out the same

And the boys go into business,
And marry, and raise a family,
And they all get put in boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

This applies to more than just suburbia; it is a mindset – or should I say mindlessness - that affects much of Christianity. You could just as easily sing, “Little Christians, little Christians. . .” all living in little boxes made of ticky-tacky thinking. It is not just the issue of Solo Sex that has been affected by these faulty ways of thinking. Many other damaging things have been imposed upon the Church of Jesus Christ as well.

Fostering Unhealthy Dependence

One identifying mark of an unhealthy church is that it fosters an unhealthy dependence and keeps its members in a perpetual state of spiritual infancy, continually dependent upon “leadership” to tell them how to think and live.. A good church is one that gives you the tools with which to think, pray, study and decide for yourself, especially in non-essential matter, or matters of conscience. Masturbation is a private matter, a matter of individual conscience, and it needs to stay that way. If you self stimulate it is none of anyone else’s business.

A Godly Way to Break Free

We crash
through the barriers
and enter into a land
of glorious freedom.
This is orgasm as
liberation,
deliverance,
and celebration!

As I said earlier one way to counteract all of this is to masturbate. (No, I’m not kidding!) The shame based, unbiblical, misery-loving group think that would rob you of your individuality and ability to discern what is right and wrong in non essential matters would tell you it is a sin. But intentionally engaging in an act of auto-eroticism is an excellent way to break free of this poisonous way of thinking and being. It is a primal and primary way of saying, “I am me; I am a Child of God; God did not just make me a part of a Church, He also made me an individual. This is not forbidden in Scripture, it is mine to freely enjoy.” Actually setting aside time to engage in arousal and positive self-pleasuring with the intent of having a wonderful and soul shaking orgasm; I cannot think of a more enjoyable way to enter into and express freedom.

When you take this positive approach the moment of orgasm will not just be a pleasurable and fulfilling physical release, but a highly edifying and affirming spiritual experience as well. During ejaculation there will be more than just physical ecstasy and the fulfillment of a release of semen. With each pleasurable spasm we can also symbolically rid our mind and our spirit of those concepts and constructs that have held us in ungodly captivity. We crash through the barriers and enter into a land of glorious freedom. This is orgasm as liberation, deliverance, and celebration!

And who knows, if we can break through in this area of life it just might be a catalyst. It can be the beginning of a long journey into freedom in other areas of our Christian belief and behavior as well. It sure is worth a try.

“He whom the Son makes free is free indeed.”

As for me I would rather walk in freedom in a way that is flawed than walk perfectly in religious bondage.

Smile!
